NAMF Projects
Wyoming 2011
With the recent sales of the five WY Governor’s moose tags held by the NAMF, Wild Sheep Foundation, MDF and RMEF, Wyoming will have more funds ($90,000) to work with than ever before. The NAMF has two representatives, Gene Linn and Rob Anderson, on the Wyoming Governor’s Big Game License (moose) Coalition (WGBGLC) along with two WG&F personnel, Tim Thomas and Steve Kilpatrick. Projects ranging from research to conservation easements are discussed and evaluated to determine where the funds are best spent for the future of Wyoming’s moose.
The NAMF is looking at other states with similar programs and will try to get representation on their committees as well. These “Governor’s Tags” programs in Wyoming and other states have proven to be a positive force for America’s wildlife.
“Rakes and Shovels” Program
Volunteer-intensive programs in coordination with local, state and provincial partners to have volunteer work days to improve wildlife habitat. The group will be trained ahead of time or “on the job”. Snacks will be provided. Projects will include planting bitterbrush and willows, improving shrub component, repairing fences, cleaning up over-browsed riparian areas and other projects deemed necessary for the advancement of good habitat. These projects will also benefit other species. Main costs will be Executive Directors and Board Members time coordinating the effort and getting the word out to volunteers via e-mail, fax and or/ phone.
Grants for Habitat Improvement and Restoration
The North American Moose Foundation grant committee will conduct quarterly reviews to consider grant requests to enhance or conserve Moose habitat.
Moose off the Highways
Promote special projects to help keep moose off of highways and major thoroughfares, as it can be a real danger to animals and drivers. The Board of Director’s Committee should meet quarterly to consider these grant applications. Volunteer time will also be given for work projects. These projects will include: cutting back trees, brush, shrubs, willows and bushes which hide the animal from the vehicle driver.
North American Moose Conference and Workshop
This annual workshop offers a wealth of information about moose and their shared habitat. It is also a great place to meet biologists that are on the cutting edge of new information that benefits moose, moose habitat and other wildlife. This should be an event that the North American Moose Foundation would like to attend yearly, as the budget allows.
Conservation Partners
Partner with other conservation groups to enhance shared habitat and resources.
